Don't bother to rent a car at the airport. Rent it by Flor do Norte and the car will wait for you at the airport. We received nice, new Fiat Panda. Great to carry two large suitcases and provide us with transportation for two weeks at the island. Thanks to electric support engine, we could get uphill almost like a pro :) Panda never disappoints in Azores. I recommend to use Flor do Norte car rental services.

We originally rented a car from another agency, but last minute they didn't have enough cars so coordinated with Rent a Car Flor do Norte to get us sorted out. We chose smaller car rental companies during our stay on Sao Miguel in September and it was the best thing we did. Tony from Flor do Norte was fantastic - friendly, honest and so helpful. My girlfriend and I had an excellent experience with Flor de Norte during our trip to Sao Miguel. We had a simple and speedy experience, even more so as they accept debit card where we found others only accepted credit. Extremely friendly and responsive staff, especially Antonio who is a very nice guy!

We rented from them for about a week, in mid June, and would definetely rent again. - car received in tip-top shape; - communication and reservation very transparent, by email and phone; - no hidden fees and no deposit, only the usual overcharge of 10EUR for off-hours service (our flight arrived at midnight, but Antonio was there in Park 1 to greet us). What we agreed to pay, we payed in the first day and that was it. - especially friendly and helpful/knowledgeable staff. Tips for driving on the island, if you may need them: there is usually plenty of parking everywhere, but the roads are pretty narrow and locals drive by very fast (just keep your cool, they know best how to avoid you); it doesn't really matter what car you get -- the size, engine and power are fairly similar across models and you'll drive in a lower gear a lot, anyway, because of the many hills. Some parts of certain roads are heavily damaged and traversed by tractors/trucks, but the potholes aren't deep at all, just frequent -- taking it slow and easy will get you there on time and with no damage. Distances and drive times are very manageable (15-30 minutes max. between main attractions). Maybe watch out for other amateur driver tourists rather than locals! Enjoy driving and the great views, it's a treat!
