Just returned from a week trip to Sao Miguel and couldn't have asked for a more pleasant and stress free experience with Way2Azores. They picked us from the parking lot near the arrivals at the airport and took us to the office (just a couple minutes away) to get our car. The process was very fast and smooth and the same when we returned the vehicle. We didn't have any problems with the car, just had to refill it and explore the island We will definitely use Way2Azores again when we return to the island.
Want to rent a car? The best option is to choose another place. Let's start with the location. If you like the far west, this is your rental company, because it's really far away from the airport. Of course, they will pick you up, but when they want or are able to answer the phone. Azores weather can be challenging sometimes, that's something we all know and accept, so flights may be delayed a little bit sometimes. If your flight arrival it's around the closing hours for them, they won't answer the phone until they can charge you the out of office hours pick-up fee. This is something that we experienced only at the Ponta Delgada office. In other islands service it's much better. If you want to rent a car without problems, please, stay away from this company. I don't know what there is to complain about. Everything was as expected, no hidden or nasty surprises, if anything the service was pleasant! Buy their own insurance or leave a EUR2500 hold on a credit card (perfectly normal when hiring a PS20k car!) (I chose the latter), hire the car (I got the Mazda 2 Hybrid which was a joy to drive, I'm considering buying one myself), don't damage it (they advise for you to take a video of it's condition upfront, which I did), keep it clean and refuel it at the end... that's it. Returning the car was quick and easy, the drop off back to the airport was by the nicest Brazilian guy I'd spoken to on the whole island. Honestly very easy to recommend W2A to anyone.
DO NOT Rent from Way2Azores! Read the reviews where they have scammed people. It happened to us. We booked a rental car that was to cost us $206.42 cdn and it ended up costing us $476.60! More than double! They told us that we did not have insurance on the car when we had booked it online. We were totally misled that we needed to ensure the car through them. We were charged an excessive amount, and had already been transported from the airport when we found this out. When returning the car because we returned the car one hour early we were charged an additional charge of $55.12 cdn. This is unbelievable because not only did they collect that days charged for the car, but also charge us an additional fee. When we initially rented the car, we asked if there was going to be any additional charges when we dropped the car off and we were told no. This company is not transparent with its additional charges, and it totally misleads you on the additional insurance. This is a consistent issue. I have read in the other reviews. I only wish I had known prior to renting from them. Do not rent from these guys. Lesson learned
Giving them 4* since they were inexpensive and generally friendly. They almost accused of us a crash but thankfully they took good video and saw the damage was already there. It was a small flap under the front bumper. When you pick up a rental car, always video the inside, outside, and underneath! We were very lucky they had video of that little piece. We did have third party car rental insurance but did not fancy trying to file a claim. I'm not even sure of the deductible if there is one. We are renting from the same company on another island so I am glad they did not charge us for damage we did not do.
Terrible Experience - Avoid at All Costs! I recently had an extremely negative experience with this car rental company. Upon arrival, we were **coerced** into renting a vehicle with an automatic transmission, even though this was not what we originally booked. To make matters worse, they **pressured** us into purchasing a comprehensive insurance package that we neither needed nor wanted. It became clear that we were dealing with **professional scammers** who have no regard for customer satisfaction. Their tactics are deceptive and unethical. I strongly advise anyone considering this company to stay far away. Don't fall victim to their dishonest practices. **Avoid this place like the plague!**
Never had a problem with any car rental in Azores, except for this one. Even if it's the cheapest option, I suggest you to look for something else. 1) very high deposit forcing you to take the insurance option at 25/day if you don't have 2200 euros of payment threshold left on your card, only with credit card btw (other car rentals were accepting debit cards) 2) we were given a faulty car with engine oil issues (see picture), had to stop on the highway, very dangerous, the car also consumed 17L for less than 100km 3) when bringing back the car, still had to go to the station to pay the fuel, not offering it even though we got a faulty car to start with, no commercial gesture whatsoever for the 40 minutes loss to change the car, not even a 3 minutes deviation to bring us to our hotel instead of the airport, making us have to pay a taxi 4) the car we got to replace the faulty one was missing wheel protection, carpets, and was a worse model than the previous one 5) the place to get the car is 5 minutes away from the airport, and you can't do self checkout outside hours (35 overcharge I believe) 6) only car rentals that pushed the insurances on us Overall you feel like you're paying less but you end up paying more than any other car rental on the island. Only positives are: the staff is not rude, they should look for a job at another more honest car rental company in my opinion.
We rented a car for 9 days in January. The price was great, the car was comfortable and gas efficient and a nice small size for the narrow roads. (Opel Corsa) And the service was pretty good until the last day. We were charged 384 euro for a bumper scrape. This is fortunately covered by our Visa card ( still waiting) and so we were able to avoid paying the extra 20 euro per day for insurance. But it took several emails and phone calls and a month long wait for WAY2AZORES to send us the accident report . A huge waste of time, and very frustrating. Make sure you get an accident report before you leave the office if something like this happens to you. And why can't bumpers be made of thick black indestructible rubber that can handle some bumps and scrapes like they used to be ????
