We had an extremely disappointing experience with Hertz during our trip to Madeira. While the initial car was fine, things took a turn when the brakes failed, and we were left dealing with a replacement car that was in poor condition. The worst part was the humiliating and disrespectful treatment from an employee named Rute at the airport. She refused to help, mocked us, raised her voice, and cynically claimed she was "the only one at Hertz in the entire world" while she refused giving us contact info of her supervisors. Her appalling behavior has led us to avoid Hertz in the future, and we strongly advice others to think twice before booking with them.
Worst experience in all the car rentals we ever had. What a nightmare, that spoiled our entire vacation. Be prepared to wait more than an hour in the queue upon car pickup. There's usually just one employee at the desk, and all information have to be written by hand on a paper, before they manually re-enter them into their PC. Easily 20 minutes per person. Finally after waiting we got a different car than we booked. They only have cars with manual transmission. The worst came upon car return. The lady employee from Hertz which was examining the car was rude and was clearly trying to find any reason just to charge us more money. "Hey look! Here you DAMAGED THE CAR!" -When it was just a piece of dirt that we cleaned. She did not listen to us, took a photo and charged us 460 EUR for the damages. When we asked why, and what is in this cost she did not explain. When we asked further, she did not want to provide any information how to challenge the claim and file a dispute. The only response from this Hertz employee was: "Sign Here and PAY". Sorry but this is just bad customer service. Afterwards, don't expect to get in touch with Hertz because they do not answer the phone and do not reply to E-Mails and online Charge dispute forms. We tried everything to no avail. If you plan to rent a car in Madeira, do NOT go with Hertz, apparently their business plan is to scam people.
Im a Hertz Gold Member and this station is doing its job like all other stations do.... The refilling is at all stations around the world blocked at the begining of the rental so did this station. If anyone of the costumers thinks its cheaper to let it refill then refill it before you give it back is just naive... sorry but i cant understand the comments about this at all.... they say how much they charge so you decide what you will do ;) they pay for the fuel and someone needs to refill and drive it this cost and will be never for free.... so its very common that this service costs extra :) I got a car and it had two more scratches then they had marked in the document so i rised it to the person send the pictures to the email that was provided to me and i was happy to go on my journey :) I parked the car at 4am and this was also business as usual keybox and so on was marked.
Worst experience I ever had to book a rental car. First they could not give us the car 20 min earlier but it was no problem for them to hand it over 1h too late. Further the whole booking rules are not coherent and they force you to pay extra for things they put wrong in their guidelines. I will never book a car with them again
Terrible experience.. met with a long line after a late flight where the employees took their sweet time (20 minutes+) per customer. They had 2 employees at first, but one of the staff left after helping just one person in line. It took hours to get our car, causing us to miss our dinner and lodging check in's - have never seen anything like this. Absolutely terrible customer service. Do yourself a favor and use any other car rental service, as hertz seems to be completely incompetent.
I am a frequent Hertz customer and rented here thinking this agency wouldn't follow the unpleasant practices of other island rentals, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case. They provided a report on the car's condition, marking some existing damages, but once we picked it up, it had many more. Fortunately, we had additional insurance, so they couldn't charge us for them. The car had issues with the SOS system and occasionally indicated that it needed to go to a service station, but the warning disappeared after a few minutes. We rented a car with air conditioning, but it didn't work properly. Once at the airport, we tried to speak with the staff at the counter, but we waited 20 minutes, and no one ever showed up, even though the agency was open. Not recommended. EDIT: After contacting customer service, Hertz understood our needs and concerns. Their customer service was very responsive and promptly addressed the issues, clearly explaining each point. I appreciate the attention and professionalism shown in handling the problem.
I cannot recommend this rental station at all. The lady who served me at the counter was incredibly unfriendly. Moreover, she pressured me into choosing the 'Refueling Options', which was supposed to cost me EUR71.10 (EUR1.58 per liter). I got a Clio and realized that it could never hold EUR71.10 worth of fuel. Despite this, the lady insisted that it would definitely be worth it and became extremely unfriendly, leaving me feeling forced to sign. The Clio had a tank capacity of 45 liters, which at EUR1.58 per liter, amounted to the EUR71.10 that the service was supposed to cost. So, even if the car had no fuel left at all, it still wouldn't be worthwhile for the customer. One should be honest and tell the customer that it might be a bit more expensive, but at least they don't have to refuel themselves. But stubbornly insisting that it is financially worthwhile for the customer and becoming extremely unfriendly is unacceptable! I can only advise every customer against visiting this rental station. And if you do, refuel yourself - there is a gas station just 500 meters away.
DO NOT RENT A CAR HERE! Beware of this car rental company. Its employees use practices that make the car more expensive for you by several hundred euros per week per rental. they will give you expensive insurance for everything possible when you hand over the car. You will receive a different vehicle than was booked in advance over the Internet. When handing over the car, they don't want to sign the handover protocol about the condition of the vehicle, even though I directly asked about it. Before we got to the plane, I received an email saying that I had not signed the protocol. I sent all the information to the company's email after the flight from Madeira. several months of correspondence did not lead to any normal answer - just classic phrases, how the client is the first place for them... the managers of the company know about these practices and only cover their subordinates in this. Such a large international car rental company should have a different way of working than it does in Madeira, Portugal. The condition of the rented vehicle was fine.
