Warning about hiring a car from Europcar in Torres Vedras. When booking in advance for a car in Portugal I chose Europcar because it offered a guaranteed specific make/model with the right sized car and Automatic gearbox. I have hired cars in Portugal for over 25 years. Due to previous car hire issues I phoned in the morning to check the specific car I had hired was available. I was told no and that I would be getting another model. When I went to pick the car up at 15:00 (choosing Torres Vedras branch instead of Lisbon airport due to the extensive queues from past years experience at Lisbon airport) the gentleman I dealt with presented me with Toyota CHF (SUV) instead of the Toyota Corolla which had been booked specifically. He said that the Corolla wasn't available. I told him that the CHF was a lower class car as the internal space is smaller and boot capacity is less. I had concerns that my luggage would not fit and my tall son would struggle in the back. He then contested that the CHF cost more (retail price) and so I was getting an "upgrade". After 20mins of getting nowhere and telling me there were no other automatic options, I asked about other cars available and he offered a Ford Focus which I didn't want as it was a manual. He said see how you get on with the CHF and if there is an issue after 3 days I'll look into getting something else. Whilst processing the CHF he told me that the CHF actually cost more to hire. I checked online and the CHF cost EUR44 per day and the car I had actually booked was EUR50. I pointed this out to him and he said prices fluctuate all the time. I pointed out that a higher class car will always cost more than the class below. I wasn't offered a refund on the price difference and I had no other choice but to take the car. I am not happy. I either have to be overcharged for a lower class of car that I didn't order, or interrupt my holiday by driving back to Torres Vedras, waste my time and probably get issued the wrong car again. I certainly won't be using Europcar again and recommend that you don't either.
We had a great experience with Europcar. It was a last minute decision to rent a car and they stepped up to the plate and rent us a very reliable car. The only inconvenience was that we couldn't connect the gps to the screen.
They rented me a car that had a check engine light come on 20 minutes after leaving their rental office. I called the company to explain that the light came on because I didn't want to be liable for any possible damages. Im no car expert, but I explained to them that the car seemed to be running fine. They told me I will have to pull over immediately because it's an orange light and that I will need to be towed and given a taxi ride home. The tow truck came and said there is no problem with the car. Now they want to charge me 40 euros for the roadside assistance when it is there fault for renting me a faulty car in the first place. Absolutely ridiculous since I had told them the car seems fine and they insisted on towing me. Shame on you Europcar!
We've denied car on the basis of not having credit card although we kept on saying try it first and even the man said you'll face the same problem in other car rentals bookings as well. Guess what we booked the car right aways with other car rental with the same card.
