Unfortunately very difficult to arrange a car. It is mostly due language barrier, the credit card terminal is not working (and that's an international car rental company!), and no cash solution was possible. I wasn't able to wait any longer (after 40 minutes trying back and forth) and didn't get the car.
The two gentlemen that organized my rental, were more than helpful. They managed to arrange a van for me on the spot. Normally, there's a 48/72 hour wait, as vans are totally booked up in advance. They truly did me a favor. However, don't try the same... I got lucky on this particular occasion! I've rented many cars from the larger companies, and you normally get duped into paying a cheap rental fee with enormous insurance costs. I paid a deposit and the rental fee, with no hidden costs that you only get told about when you actually go to collect the vehicle. I paid less than 45EUR for a small van for the day. The other companies I considered were three time the price! Again, the two gentlemen at the Europcar office in Viana de Castelo, were an absolute pleasure to deal with!! Highly recommended. Give them a raise Europcar!!! :)
They rented me a car that had a check engine light come on 20 minutes after leaving their rental office. I called the company to explain that the light came on because I didn't want to be liable for any possible damages. Im no car expert, but I explained to them that the car seemed to be running fine. They told me I will have to pull over immediately because it's an orange light and that I will need to be towed and given a taxi ride home. The tow truck came and said there is no problem with the car. Now they want to charge me 40 euros for the roadside assistance when it is there fault for renting me a faulty car in the first place. Absolutely ridiculous since I had told them the car seems fine and they insisted on towing me. Shame on you Europcar!
I've contracted the toll service whith the rental, paid for it and it was confirmed in the email I received. Some mistake happened on Europcar side and as they said "the toll service didn't make it to the final invoice" what they did then was telling me I didn't contracted the toll service and and because I went through tools they charged me 50EUR of administrative fees. Avoid, they'll make mistakes and make you pay for it.
